Discipline Presentation

One course that every undergrad has to take at Northeastern before they can graduate is advanced writing. Many of those classes are discipline-specific, but one is interdisciplinary (ENGW 3315) for students who are interested in collaborative work across multiple disciplines. Each major accepts advanced writing in their specific field (such as technical professions for computer science) and the interdisciplinary course. I do so much technical work for my other classes (and really enjoyed branching out in my journalism classes) that I chose 3315 without a second thought.

The first presentation assignment was about our disciplines, and it could take any format. My initial idea was to make a slideshow like all the examples we could refer to. But two days before my presentation, my friend introduced me to pudding.cool and scrollama, which instantly inspired me.

I love scrolling stories, and I definitely spend a significant chunk of time away from my assignments reading and appreciating them. I’d love to be able to produce stories with great writing and interaction. I explored the scrollama library and experimented with the examples. What if I could make a scrolling version of my presentation? It would be a great delivery of a presentation concentrating on human-centered computing. And that’s how I decided to make https://discipline-presentation.vercel.app!

Inspiration, from my presentation

I ended up writing a lot more code than I was expecting and putting in a lot more time than necessarily warranted, but I enjoyed the process and it was great fun!
